New Years Eve 2012

Monday was a pretty laid back day, but started early with James and I dropping his car off to get detailed at 8am! It was a gift from me because his car was pretty messy inside and out after all the traveling we’ve done! Not long after we got back, my brother and Owen got up and we got to see some sweet baby smiles!

Baby smiles!

Baby smiles!

The rest of the day was spent pretty much like that, just hanging out and relaxing. Reagan got in a pretty good morning nap and was charged and ready to go when Grandma Davis put together her pop-up castle! Grandma played with her in it for a while and then Daddy got into the action as well!

After a yummy dinner of hamballs, we watched a little TV, and then got all bundled up to take Reagan to Windmont to see the Christmas lights. Windmont is the park down the road from my parents and has the most amazing Christmas lights every year! Unfortunately I overestimated Reagan’s ability to stay awake after no afternoon nap and lots of playing and Miss Reagan fell asleep before we even got parked! She did look at the lights as we drove around the park, but as soon as James turned around the block to go back to the park to stop Reagan literally crashed! Yet, the show must go on, so we did get out and take a couple of pictures!

We didn’t stay too long because it was cold and Reagan really was passed out! When we got back to the house we got her out of her jacket and cold weather clothes and she never woke up!! Unfortunately this set the tone for the rest of the night in that after Reagan went to bed, my Dad went to bed around 9pm, and then I went to bed shortly after him!! James and everyone else (even my Mom!) stayed up close to midnight before calling it quits and going to bed. I guess none of us are the party animals we once (ever?) were!

Jones 2012 Video

With the addition of Reagan right before the start of the year, 2012 has been a crazy and wonderful year! The first half of the year was spent learning how to be parents and getting me back on my feet after 114 days of bedrest and a cesarean with Reagan! Yet, starting in May we set our state count back to zero for Reagan and and managed to pick up 18 states and one country this year! This was from four vacations: Michigan trip, Omaha trip, cruise down the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers, and Florida trip.  It’s been a great year and the following video recaps some of our highlights as a new family!

Also check out our videos from previous years!

Meeting Owen

Sunday morning we headed to Kewanee to stay with my parents for a few days. My brother and his family had been visiting my parents from Wyoming and we wanted to make sure and see them when we had the chance.  Back in October my brother and his wife had little baby Owen and we hadn’t met him!

As soon as we got to Kewanee, Reagan was super excited to see Grandma Davis and to meet baby Owen. We’d been watching videos of Grandma, Grandpa, and Baby Owen on my phone, so Reagan knew who everyone was! It was great to see everyone and get our hands on baby Owen!!

It was a lot of fun being around everyone and we got a kick out of how much Reagan really did like Owen. She was very gentle with him and loved pointing at him and loving on him!

Since we hadn’t seen each other for Christmas or Reagan’s birthday, we (Reagan) had a bunch of presents to open after dinner! Reagan was pretty cute and seemed to really like her Christmas gifts. She got completely spoiled by everyone with adorable clothes and lots of fun toys!!

Cake was a pretty messy affair, so Grandma whisked Reagan away for a quick sink bath.  Then it was time for some jammies!  Since Owen was decked out in his blue and gray Old Navy PJ’s, we figured we’d get Reagan into hers as well! Yes, Reagan and Owen have the same PJ’s except Owen’s have feet!

December 2012 Vacation Recap

By the numbers we drove 2706 miles, went through seven states, visited 2 aquariums, and took 4 trips to the zoo. The seven states we visited were Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, & Florida! The two aquariums were the South Carolina Aquarium and Gulfarium Marine Park. The visits to the zoo included the Rainforest Discovery Adventure Zoo, Montgomery Zoo, and the Gulf Breeze Zoo twice!

Day 16: Home!

A couple simple, but fun memories from this vacation include every time we’d get into an elevator we would point out the floor number to Reagan and then count up (or down) as the number changed. Most of the time one of us would count in English and one of us would count in Spanish. Reagan grew to really enjoy this ritual and would point at the number as soon as we would get on an elevator! Another fun memory is Reagan eating more of the animal food from the Gulf Breeze Zoo than she would normally eat regular food! Reagan likes real food, but she really really liked the animal food and was popping it into her mouth like candy!

Overall it was a fun vacation and Reagan seemed to have a really good time!

Home from Florida

Saturday James woke up around 5am and couldn’t get back to sleep because he was worried about the weather and our drive home. After checking online he woke me up (not really, but I was fine pretending to sleep) and asked how I felt about getting up and going. The bed was warm and cozy, but I grudgingly got up and ready and packed. Between the two of us, we got Reagan changed and her clothes on without waking her up, and loaded the car and the sleeping baby. By some miracle we were back on the road a little before 6:45am.

The roads were clear, Reagan was doing good, and James was making great time. We’d already gone about 2 hours when James asked if I wanted to stop in Marion, IL for breakfast and to change Reagan. I thought about it and said no because it was just starting to snow, we were good on gas, and Reagan was content. Then, literally like 2 minutes later, Reagan proceeded to puke all over herself and me (I was in the back keeping her entertained).  James then looked back at me through the review mirror and with a completely straight face asked if I *now* wanted to stop in Marion. Smartass. We pulled over in Marion at a Hardees to assess the situation.

Both Reagan I were covered top and bottom in puke. The only positives were that she hadn’t had anything other than breast milk so far that morning, so the smell and consistency wasn’t too bad and that Reagan didn’t seem to be feeling bad. I still wasn’t sure what to do though because we were really covered. James had the presence of mind to remember that his brother-in-laws parents live in Marion and that they are family and might let us come over and get cleaned up. After a little calling around we got in touch with them, but they had things to take care of and wouldn’t be able to have us over for another 30 minutes. We went ahead and planned to go to their house in a little bit and I bit the bullet and tried to get us cleaned up. The bathroom in Hardees didn’t have a changing table, so I stripped Reagan out of her clothes and handed James a naked baby, wet-wipes, clean diaper, and a change of clothes. I then went back to the bathroom to change clothes and try and get cleaned up. Overall it wasn’t perfect, but at least we were out of our pukey clothes.

We then went to visit Jolene and Benny (James’ brother-in-laws parents) for a little bit.  They were very gracious hosts, especially given that we invited ourselves over at the last minute! We had a nice time chatting and getting to see their new house (they just moved back to Illinois from Alabama in the last year). Reagan also had a good time blowing them kisses, playing with the toys, and looking at all their pretty things! We were only there for about an hour, but it was a nice chance to see them and to let Reagan move around!

Once we left we were hopeful, since we had already filled up with gas and were only three hours from home, that our next stop would be home! Ha, not more than 5-10 minutes back on the road from Jolene and Benny’s and James sniffed the air asked if Reagan had pooped. I sniffed a little closer to the potential source and yep, Reagan had definitely pooped. Thus we had to pull over at the next exit to clean up a very very poopy diaper. And no, apparently she couldn’t have done that before we got back in the car!

Finally we got back on the road, Reagan fell asleep, and we went back to making pretty good time. It was still snowing pretty good, but thankfully the roads were clear and the further north we got the less snow there was on the ground.

Reagan finally asleep after her morning adventures!

We briefly stopped at County Market in Pana for a few groceries, but otherwise, it was straight home! Well… kind of straight home. Being that Reagan is a whole year old now we thought she might like to try her hand at driving…

**Side note: For those of you possibly worried about Reagan driving, she didn’t get in the front seat with James until we were on the half mile private lane to our house. So basically she was driving in our driveway, it’s just that our driveway is a little bit longer than most people’s!**

We got home a little after 2pm and it felt wonderful to be home!! After being gone so long I was worried that Reagan might not completely remember home, but as soon as we walked in the door she started pointing at her favorite things and wanted down to play! James got the car unloaded while I started unpacking just so I could pack again.  Why pack again? Because tomorrow we are leaving for Kewanee for two days. My brother and his wife and 2 month old son are visiting and this is our only chance to see them before they go back to Wyoming. We’ve never met baby Owen before, so I can’t wait to get my hands on him!! Not ideal timing given that we just got back from a 15 day vacation, but sometimes you just have to go with it!

Long day of driving

Friday morning we got everything packed and ready to go and were on the road a little after 8:30AM. We didn’t have a specific stopping point in mind, but the car GPS said it was 13 hours to home, so we figured we needed to make it at least 6-7 hours to the halfway point. Also, we had checked the weather and knew some crappy weather was coming and wanted to try and avoid as much of it as possible. Thus, our day turned into driving driving and more driving. Miss Reagan was a trooper because other than stopping for food, gas, and to use the bathroom (normally at rest areas), we didn’t stop and do anything fun like normal. What we were able to do though was make it within five hours of home before we stopped for the night!!

We stopped for the night right across the Kentucky border in Oak Grove.  We went ahead and splurged on a King suite so that way Reagan would have plenty of room to move around and play. We weren’t disappointed, the room offered plenty of space and was overall very nice.

After a foiled attempt to go out for dinner, we ended up ordering pizza from a local place and having it delivered.  The pizza was pretty good and it was nice for Reagan to be able to crawl around all over and move while we were eating.

It was a very very long day of driving, we were in the car from 8:30am to almost 7pm, but getting as far as we did definitely made it worth it!

Reagan’s one year birthday

Thursday Reagan turned one year old!! To celebrate we started by going to a cupcakery to pick out some extra special birthday cupcakes for her to smash later that evening!!

Ready to go pick out our cupcakes!

There were lots of yummy flavors to choose from, but Reagan kept pointing to the one with a Christmas tree on top. Reagan has loved Christmas trees (and their decorations) this entire trip, so with her birthday being so close to Christmas it seemed appropriate. Yet, it was strawberry flavored and Reagan has never been a huge strawberry fan. Thus to make sure there was something she’d like, Daddy and I went ahead and picked out three other cupcakes as back-ups… or *possibly* for Mommy and Daddy to eat! We ended up with mint, cookies-n-cream, and chocolate chocolate cupcakes along with Reagan’s strawberry/Christmas tree cupcake.

After picking out cupcakes and Mommy indulging in her first real macaroon, chocolate of course, we went out for breakfast and then to the Gulf Breeze Zoo! We’d already been to the zoo last Sunday, but we all had such a good time and especially Reagan that it seemed fitting to take her again for her birthday!

This time we also did something extra that we didn’t do last time, we visited the Budgie House! Budgies are basically parakeets and these were trained pretty well to go after the sticks of food we bought to give them! Reagan liked looking at them, but didn’t like it when they were on her hand very much!

The zoo wore Reagan out and she slept most the way from the zoo, back into the condo, and then a while at home! Once she woke up it was time for some dinner, opening presents, and then some birthday cupcakes!! We opened presents first since we realized that after cupcakes it would be immediately time for a bath!

Reagan’s birthday cupcake was a stunning success in messiness! Reagan had a great time smearing her cupcake and frosting all over everything.  And yes, I mean everything! We didn’t have a highchair for her in the condo, so Reagan was free to wander as she enjoyed her cupcake!

As soon as we were done with the cupcakes we took Reagan straight to the shower! She was covered in frosting and needed sprayed down! We then let her play in the bathtub while we washed her clothes so they wouldn’t stain!!

Our time in Florida and the condo was quickly coming to close and we spent the rest of the evening packing and getting things together so we could leave as early as possible in the morning. Overall it was a great day and a wonderful first birthday for Reagan!!

Reagan’s One Year Recap

It is hard to believe, but Reagan is one year old today!! Our little Miss has grown and changed so much in the last year that it’s sometimes hard to remember her as our little baby girl.

Reagan then and now! What a difference a year can make!

Reagan then and now! What a difference a year can make!

Because time goes so fast and memories fade, I am thankful I created a special page on our blog just for “Keeping up with Reagan.” This page documents her birth, well baby check-ups, major developmental milestones, monthly videos/updates, and weekly updates!! I might have majorly struck out on trying to keep up with Reagan’s baby book, but I think I hit a home run with all the pictures, video, and documentation of everything she’s done in the last year!

Happy First Birthday!!

Happy First Birthday!!

Below are some of the highlights from the year:

Growth

Even though my doctor predicted that Reagan would be a small baby, she surprised us all by coming in at 7lbs 8pz and 20 5/8 inches at birth. While that was an average size, Reagan took to nursing like a champ and quickly jumped to the top of the growth curve.

  • Birth – 7lbs 8 oz & 20 5/8 inches
  • Two Months – 13 lbs 13.8 oz & 24 5/8 inches
  • Four Months – 18 lbs 4 oz & 26 inches
  • Six Months – 20 lbs 0.64 oz & 27  3/4 inches
  • Nine Months – 22 lbs 3.4 oz & 29 1/8 inch
  • Twelve Months – ??

We don’t go for Reagan’s well baby check-up and official measurements until January, but my guess is that her weight hasn’t increased too much, but that she’s definitely gained some in height! I’m basing this entirely from the fact that her pants are finally fitting her better around the waist (not as tight) and length wise  (not as long)!

Looking good!

Looking good!

Eating wise, Reagan was exclusively breastfed (and breastmilk fed while Mommy was at work) for almost the first six months. We started solids around 5.5 months with little tastes of real food. Reagan has NEVER had processed baby food and especially no rice cereal. We’ve always given her little bits of real food and let her feed herself, but we never pushed it and some days she never had any solids. Around 7.5 months we started giving Reagan solids more regularly and I also started sending homemade purees and slices of fruit and veggies with Reagan to the babysitter. Reagan loved fresh fruit and veggies, but would normally suck the juices out of everything and then spit most of it back out! This continued until about 11 months when we finally noticed Reagan actually eating food and especially meat! Reagan is a big meat eater and will eat all types of meat! As of one year, Reagan is eating more and more solid food, but still nurses (gets breastmilk) for her primary source of nutrition. The benefits of nursing/breastmilk extend far past one year and I am letting Reagan wean herself from nursing. I imagine the older she gets and more solids she eats the less she will nurse, but I’ll let Reagan set her own timeline for that.

Developmental Milestones

Reagan has reached a number of large developmental milestones over the last year and each one has been just as exciting as the first!

Reagan is crazy close to being a full blown walker. She can walk quite a bit and even bend down and pick things up and turn around and keep walking!

Walking, walking, walking!

Walking, walking, walking!

Reagan also has a lot of teeth! I’m not 100% sure on the number because she hates it when we try and get into her mouth.  We do know she has her top four and bottom four front teeth and at least 3-4 bottom middle teeth with top middle teeth close to coming in as well!

Check out the teeth!!

Check out the teeth!!

Additional milestones we’ve really noticed in the last month is Reagan’s interest in books, wanting to knowing what things are, and her ability to pick out what something is if you ask her. These skills and interests have exploded in the last month and I love how her brain is like a sponge trying to gather as much information as possible. Reagan doesn’t talk much yet, but you can tell the gears are definitely turning and it won’t be long!

Travel

Our hope is that the travel bug will bite Reagan and she will grow up loving to see new and different things. To get her started on the right foot, we went on three major vacations and one weekend trip that accounted for Reagan visiting and doing something in 18 different states and one different country (Canada) in her first year.

States Reagan has visited by trip. Pink is the Michigan trip. Blue is the Omaha trip. Green is the Florida trip.

Reagan visited the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida. This is an accumulation from our Michigan trip, Omaha trip, and Florida trip.  We also took a fourth trip between the Omaha and Florida vacations and cruised down the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers on a paddle wheel boat and then visited the St. Louis Arch.

Checking out the hotel room!

Checking out the hotel room!

Reagan has also traveled pretty extensively in her home state of Illinois and has already visited almost half of the different counties. There are 102 counties in Illinois and Reagan has visited 45 of them during our travels this year.

Illinois Counties Reagan has visited!

Reagan has seen and done a lot of different things during our travels, but one of the big things she has done is visit six zoo’s in four different states and one different country, as well as two aquariums:

  • Canada
  • Omaha, NE
  • Pigeon Forge, TN
  • Charleston, NC
  • Montgomery, AL
  • Gulf Breeze, FL
  • Destin, FL

Personality

Reagan has so much life and energy and is such a happy little girl. Reagan absolutely charms everyone she meets and it never gets old hearing strangers tell us how adorable/cute she is and how much personality she has. When we are out and about it is quite common to hear this from at least 2-3 people. Reagan is quite the little ham and will smile, wave, and now blow kisses at people that look at her, much less give her attention! She loves being out in social situations and watching people. Yet, Reagan will not go to just anyone and prefers to be adored (and give smiles) from the safety of Mommy or Daddy’s arms.

Our little girl just oozes personality and loves people!!

Our little girl just oozes personality and loves people!!

Overall

Our little girl has been very busy in the last year and it is hard to remember her as the tiny little baby we brought home from the hospital. Reagan is truly the best of both James and I and we are amazingly lucky to have her in our lives. It has been a crazy and amazing first year and we can’t wait to see what the next hold!
