Reagan says…

Here’s a list of some of the things Reagan has said lately…

  • No brush – (in response to whether Mommy could brush her teeth)
  • fingernail polish
  • I want my mama – 7/8/13
  • Fudge, fudge, fudge – imitating what Mommy said after she hurt her foot
  • Stop sign
  • Red light
  • Up – Reagan reaching her arms up to one of us and saying “up”
  • Toothbrush 7/21/13

Carnival fun

After the reunion, we went back to my parents house, got cleaned up a little, and then headed downtown to the official Hog Day’s festivities! We started with the big slide!

What do you think? Want to ride the big slide?

I took Reagan and Austin took Owen… and the verdict? The kids didn’t look like they were having much fun, but as soon as we were done Reagan wanted to do it again! I guess that means she liked it?

We also went on the train, which Reagan loved! In fact, she loved it so much that we rode it twice in a row and she wanted to keep riding it!!

When we finally got Reagan off the train we wandered through the food area and Daddy ended up getting a few official Hog Day’s pork chop sandwiches. Reagan wanted a bite of course and seemed to really enjoy them as well!

When Daddy was done eating Reagan went on the car ride with two of her cousin’s. This was her first time going on a ride without Mommy or Daddy and we were amazed at how much she enjoyed it; Reagan actually held onto the seat belt and wouldn’t let go when I tried to get her out of the ride!

Daddy hadn’t gotten a chance to ride any rides with Reagan, so for our last ride of the day, Daddy took Reagan on the big slide and they both seemed to enjoy it!

It was a fun afternoon and that evening we went on a walk with Grandma Davis to the park to play on the equipment. Reagan was ok with it for a while, but then she was done and wanted to go home and go to bed! I guess it had been a long and busy day for her as well!

Swedman Family Reunion

Friday night we didn’t get to Kewanee until 8:30-9pm, but Reagan was wide awake and ready for some fun! Even though it had been a while since she’d seen her Grandpa Davis she took right to him and climbed in his lab with baby Owen!

Saturday we had the Swedman Family Reunion at Windmont Park. It was scheduled for the middle of the day, so that morning we got up and ready and then took some family pictures.

We did our pictures at Windmont and had one of my HS friends (Tracy Toohill) who moonlights as a photographer take them!

Tracy did a great job and I’m really glad we got someone to take some nice family pictures for us; the little ones will only be little once and I want to make sure we document/remember them at this stage!

After pictures, we went back to the house (about two blocks away!) and changed clothes and headed back to Windmont for the Swedman family reunion! The Swedman side of the family is through my paternal Grandmother and her siblings (two sisters and a brother); none of the older generation is left, but there are plenty of the next generation still around to keep things going!

Reagan had a pretty good time and was everywhere and into everything! She especially liked the riding toys that some of the other cousins brought and let her ride.

Overall it was a good time and it was nice to see so many of the extended family that I normally don’t see!

August books

In August I only read 9 books. It was a crazy crazy busy month at work with the fall semester starting, our office being down one student worker, and switching to a new learning management system (that I was in charge of). Yep, crazy! I’ve been so tired that I’ve fallen asleep with Reagan at night instead of staying up and reading.

August Books:

Summary

The Shadow Agents series was a pretty good read. Good enough in fact that after the first one (which was free) I got the other two and pre-ordered the fourth in the series! The McCarthys book was #9 in the series and while it wasn’t as good as previous books, it was good enough that I’ll definitely be ordering the 10th book when it becomes available.

The Avenging Angel book took me a while to get into, but once I did, I ended up enjoy it. In fact, I ended up enjoying it enough that I looked up the other books that came before this one and downloaded all three!

Honeymoon for One was a cute sweet book and good enough that I looked up the author and bought another one of her books, Aloha Texas. This book was also decent and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Crazy in Paradise reminded me a little of the Whiskey series, kind of annoyed me with out the lead character wouldn’t stand up for herself to her sleazy lawyer, but overall was a fun quick read. It was also good enough that I went ahead and ordered the other two books in the series!

Deception Cove is a typical Jayne Castle book, but better than some. It was pretty fast paced, well-written, and definitely worth the read!

Overall a good month of reading and I’ve got six new books (3 in the Fallen series; 2 in the Paradise series; 1 in the Whiskey series) that I can’t wait to start for next month!

Check out the other books I’ve read so far this year:

In all seriousness

James is a very dedicated and hard working College Professor. He cares a lot about his students and agonizes over what he can do to improve the learning/understanding in his courses. Part of what he does to keep his students engaged in his Statistics course is to incorporate real world stuff into class. This includes collecting data from different types of everyday products, including fruit snacks, Starbursts, Skittles, fruit cups, paper towels, and McDonald’s game pieces just to name a few he’s used over the years! Yet, his most recent endeavor includes taking apart regular and double stuff Oreos and weighing them.

From the picture above, I’d say this is data collection opportunity has ended up being one of the more creative ones for the students! Hopefully it will also transfer over into better understanding and learning of the concepts as well!

Packing for Hog Days 2013

Thursday night Reagan *helped* me pack for our trip to Kewanee and Hog Days! Her helping was more pulling everything back out of the suitcase, but those are just details… 😉

Reagan also helped Daddy try on his shirts! James had a few new shirts that he needed to try on and make sure they fit and Reagan insisted on trying one of them on!

It was pretty funny to see Reagan swimming in James’ shirt and she loved it. Reagan was prancing around and rolling all over the bed smiling and laughing!

Relaxing

Reagan was helping James do some laundry and ended up climbing into the basket with her snacks and watching a little TV! Daddy was nice enough to add the pillow behind her for some extra comfort!

Impromptu family gathering

Wednesday Ty and his family flew into Bloomington for Hog Days and the Swedman Family Reunion. My Mom drove down from Kewanee to pick them up, but since we live so close, we decide meet them at the airport and welcome them to Illinois!

We got their luggage and then headed to Shooters (Glenn’s establishment) for dinner! At Shooters we met up with Glenn and Debbie, as well as Linda and John (my Mom’s sisters and their significant others). It was quite the gathering that only got larger (and even more fun) when our cousin Rush and his family showed up!!

It was a great evening and it was amazing how many of us were able to meet up on such short notice!! Also funny, as an after the fact realization, I have a took a lot of pictures of Owen and Reagan, but almost none of Ty and Austin! Sorry guys, that’s what happens when you have such a cute little guy that doesn’t mind getting passed around!!

Teeth brushing

This morning as I was getting ready for work Reagan joined me in the bathroom to brush her teeth. She ended up with three different toothbrushes and her Daddy’s toothpaste (her toothpaste and my toothpaste weren’t good enough for her I guess!). I guess I should just be happy she’s brushing her teeth! 🙂

Twenty month update

Little Miss Reagan Kay is twenty months old!!

Busy girl playing in the sink!

Busy girl playing in the sink!

Here is some of what Reagan has been up to this month:

  • Climbing: Reagan loves climbing onto and into things! I don’t think there is a chair in the house that she hasn’t climbed (or tried to climb) into! She is quite daring and has no fear! As I was doing the dishes one afternoon I saw something out of the corner of my eye and it was Reagan who had used her step-stool to climb up onto the kitchen counter! She was standing on the counter and getting into the cupboard with her snacks in it!!
  • Snuggling: Daddy has learned a new trick with Reagan. When she is super tired and cranky he can hold her and ask her to put her head on Daddy’s shoulder. Just a little bit of snuggling into Daddy like this and she is usually calmed down and/or asleep!
  • Books: Corduroy is Reagan’s new favorite book this month! In one afternoon I probably ready it (over and over again) 10 times or more! She loves the book so much, I ended up buying her a stuffed Corduroy bear.
Time to read books!! Corduroy is her current favorite!

  • Talking: Reagan does do a lot of talking, but is quite good with her hand motions and normally able to get her point across. She’s actually pretty cute with pointing at herself, then one of us and then whatever she wants (or wants to go). She’s also gotten into pointing to something and then pointing to her open hand – indicating that she wants something in her hand. All of this has really made me wish we would have done more with the baby sign language. I think Reagan really would have caught onto it.
  • Understanding: Reagan might not say a lot, but her cognitive understanding of what’s going on, what things are, and doing things we ask her to do is excellent. An example of this is that I can ask her to help Mommy get her shoes on and knows to go to my closet and get one of my shoes (not Daddy’s). When I ask her to help me find the other she knows to go back into the closet and try to find a matching shoe (they are all really out of order most the time!).  She does lots of other things that require following directions, knowing where specific things are, and remembering where to find things.
  • Helping: Reagan is quite the helper and loves helping Daddy outside. This includes painting, using tools, and anything else that requires getting dirty! Reagan also loves helping to wash dishes and put dishes away from the dishwasher!
Fun washing dishes with Daddy!

  • Playing: Reagan still does a lot of independent play (even though it doesn’t always feel like it!) and seems to be fascinated by anything in a drawer or cupboard!
  • Outdoors:  Reagan still loves being outdoors! Most mornings it’s one of the first things she wants to do after getting up! This includes playing with her water table, riding the tractor and wagon, playing by the pool, and digging around in the sand and gravel!
Playing in the rocks

  • Pool: Reagan enjoys the pool, but not swimming as much as playing along the stairs going down to the shallow end. Her favorite things are the duck and dolphin pool toys (chlorine dispenser), PH test strips, and using her net to get things out of the water!
I love summer and the pool!

I love summer and the pool!

  • Attached: Reagan is still pretty attached to Mommy, but thinks Daddy is pretty awesome when she wants to go outside and ride on the tractor!
  • Getting into things: Nothing is safe (or sacred) around our house! Reagan is literally into everything and fascinated by the smallest of things!
  • Nursing: Reagan is still a good little nurser and enjoys her momma milk in the morning, throughout the day if I’m home, and nurses to sleep (and throughout the night). She is definitely a comfort nurser and will climb onto Mommy lap if she is hurt, scared, tired, or not feeling good.
Needing a little comfort from Mommy

  • Solid Food: Reagan likes a lot of different foods; pretty much everything. Yet, she doesn’t eat a lot of anything. She’ll eat of this and a bite of that, but she normally does eat a lot at one sitting. When she does eat, some of her favorite foods include: corn, watermelon, strawberries in vanilla Greek yogurt, rice, and pasta.
Look, it's an orange! I love oranges!!

Look, it’s an orange! I love oranges!!

  • Sleeping: Reagan is still sleeping pretty good. No night wake-ups, but still dream nursing on and off (but not as much) during the night.
  • Favorite things: Reagan loves playing in water. Whether it’s in the sink, water table, pool, shower, or bathtub, Reagan loves the water! Reagan also loves watching Super Why on PBS. She doesn’t watch a lot of TV (pretty much Super Why and that’s it), but when she does, Super Why is her favorite!

Reagan is an amazing little girl and it’s hard to believe another month has passed! We can’t wait to see what next month brings!

Love you baby girl!
